The bargaining unit representing the Librarians of
The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library

Proposed Committees
Submitted by Tom Morrissey

  • Legislative
Charge: Stay abreast of political issues affecting libraries/librarians, identify local, state, and national lawmakers who are friendly or unfriendly to our concerns, contact politicians on behalf of our membership, and inform Association members of committee activities.
  • Public Relations
Charge: Establish and maintain the image of the Librarians Association in the local media. Monitor local media coverage of libraries and library issues. Identify and maintain contact with reporters who cover these issues.
  • Membership Chair
Charge: Maintain a database of all the librarians working for the BECPL system, send packets and membership applications to new employees and keep track of all full-time and part-time employees. Create mailing labels for Footnotes, the Association, various committees, etc. and generate lists as needed. Update contact & correspondence with the Erie County Personnel Dept., the Association Treasurer, and NYSUT.
  • Re-imbursement Committee
Duties involve coordination, with the Association Secretary, of reimbursement to members for Association approved expenditures.
  • Professional Council
Charge: Address and monitor ongoing situations in order to forestall grievances or problems and generally provide for a better understanding of all parties by sharing information and concerns. Composed of 6 members. The association has one member each from Central, Extension and Contracting - I don't know if that is by rule or custom. The other half of the council is 3 administrators - when it was last active admin was usually represented by Mary Jean, MCM (then deputy director) and Ken Stone. One of the last matters they discussed was extended sick leave for one or two members.
  • Personal and Professional Growth
Charge: Identifying and arranging for workshops, speakers and continuing education opportunities of professional interest to our membership, funded by LA budget. Address substantive, thought provoking issues. Such events could be co-sponsored with the library, the library school at UB, or other local groups who share our concerns (ex. first amendment or confidentiality rights, promoting literacy etc.) Coordinate programs on matters of non-professional interest that are offered by our union or for - profit organizations (e.g. defensive driving class, investment advice, etc). It would not organize social events.
